What is BREEAM?
BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is one of the most internationally recognized sustainability certifications. It assesses the environmental, social and economic performance of buildings throughout their life cycle. This assessment includes everything from design and construction to use and maintenance.
Main characteristics of the BREEAM seal:
• Comprehensive assessment: BREEAM examines various aspects of sustainability, including energy efficiency and water management. It also considers occupant health and well-being, the use of sustainable materials, waste management, pollution, transport, land use and ecology, and innovation.
• Classification by levels: Buildings are rated on a scale ranging from “Pass” to “Outstanding.” This classification is made according to the degree of sustainability achieved.
• Tangible benefits: BREEAM certification can lead to reduced operating costs, improved occupant well-being, increased asset value and improved corporate reputation.
• International adaptability: Although BREEAM was developed in the United Kingdom, it has been adapted to various national contexts. Thus, it has been implemented in Spain, where it is known as BREEAM ES.
